Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) will continue to pause non-emergency animal intakes to curb overcrowding in a new management plan.
The plan will focus on a more manageable animal population, improving diversion and placement of animals and returning strays to owners.
The announcement comes after IACS announced a pause in intakes following the death of a dog from Kennel Cough and the shelter consistently operating over capacity.
The population management plan is aiming for 80% operating capacity to eliminate the need for overflow housing, improve medical care, provide greater support for staff and increase available space. It also allows room for intake surges such as large-scale impounding related to criminal behavior.
If the shelter exceeds 100% capacity, euthanasia will be considered following the exhaustion of all other rehoming options. The decision will be based on the animal’s physical and mental well-being, their behavior and prospects for placement and the shelter’s ability to accommodate.
Currently, the shelter has 189 dogs and 15 cats available for adoption. The shelter is located at 2600 S. Harding St. and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
