Ronald McDonald House decks the halls

More by this author

Eye-popping and unique Christmas trees filled every room of the Ronald McDonald House of Central Indiana (RMHCI) during its annual Deck the Halls celebration Dec. 7. RMHCI has been around for over 40 years, providing a “home away from home” for families dealing with children in the hospital.

“It’s just a fun time around here, and it takes a village to create what we do here,” said Community Engagement Coordinator Meredith Smith.

The Deck the Halls event allows corporations and organizations who donate to see firsthand how their contributions help families. Donors and other attendees were able to tour the house, meet families and participate in events, including a tree decorating competition.

Each participating organization decorated one of the trees on display in the house. Families currently staying at the house and other guests voted on their favorite tree. The winner received the Deck the Halls Champion trophy. Some of this year’s participants included CarMax, Sun King Brewery and Barnes and Thornburg, LLP.

“They [the trees] definitely make it festive, and I love how this year people went with the theme of their business for the trees because it makes them all so different,” Smith said.

Families can stay free at RMHCI while their children are receiving medical care. During their stay, families can make use of the kitchen, cook for themselves and enjoy meals that are provided multiple nights each week. The house also has various living rooms, game rooms, laundry rooms, a playground, and fully furnished bedrooms and bathrooms for families. Last year, the average stay for a family at the house was 37 nights.

Many people believe the house is only available to families with children being treated at Riley Hospital, but Smith said they accept families with children receiving medical care at any Indianapolis-area hospital. Also, while they do not provide any direct medical assistance, RMHCI supplies the families with basic needs so they can focus on their child’s health.

To continue providing these services to families, RMHCI accepts donations throughout the year. Donations can include household items, like laundry detergent, soap, toothpaste, non-perishable food and most other food before its expiration dates. They also accept toys and puzzles for families, especially during this time of year. Donations can be dropped off directly at the house, 435 Limestone St.
