Despite the gloomy weather expected this Friday, the Brightwood Community Center and the Domestic Violence Network plan to liven up the Martindale Brightwood community with a free cookout to raise awareness for domestic violence prevention.

The event will include games, a bounce house, face painting and free food and beverages. During the event, there will be several vendors present that will provide a variety of resources, such as childcare and Medicaid vouchers, domestic violence prevention support from local organizations and health screenings.

According to the Strategic Collaboration Specialist for the Domestic Violence Network, Rebecca Berry, both the Brightwood Community Center and the Domestic Violence Network decided to host this event “to foster the relationship in the Brightwood community” and educate community members on domestic violence prevention.

The cookout will take place from 2-6 p.m. on April 28 at the Brightwood Community Center located at 2140 N. Arsenal Ave. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held at Scott United Methodist Church, 2153 Dr. Andrew J Brown.

In 2021, there were 2,871 domestic violence related runs made by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in this area, which accounted for almost 9% of the agency’s total runs for domestic violence.

According to the State of Domestic Violence Report, the 46218-zip code is one of the top 10 Indianapolis neighborhoods where calls requesting domestic violence services originate.

The Domestic Violence Network’s mission is to change the culture that leads to domestic violence through advocacy, education and collaboration in the community at large.
