Garner receives national Award

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) will present Sanford Garner, president of the Indianapolis firm A2SO4, with the 2011 Young Architects Award, which is given to architects (licensed 10 or fewer years), for their design work, leadership and contributions to the profession.

Garner is among 11 architects (the only one from Indiana) who will receive the award at the AIA 2011 National Convention in New Orleans this spring.

“It’s an honor to receive a national award, such as the Young Architects Award, but what’s brought me the greatest satisfaction as an architect and as a resident of Indianapolis has been the work that’s ongoing to revitalize and renew our urban core,” Garner said.

An Indianapolis native, Garner has focused his career on urban design, historic preservation and master planning. He may be best known for his urban design work at Fall Creek Place, which has become a national model for urban revitalization and public-private partnerships.

The project, which has earned numerous national awards and accolades, includes 243 new homes and 87 new townhomes and 46 rehabilitated houses.

Located on the northwest edge of downtown, Fall Creek Place transformed a blighted area into a thriving urban neighborhood.

Garner co-founded A2SO4 in 2001, and has grown the four-person firm into a team of more than 20. The firm’s work has included such projects as the new airport terminal parking garage, Lucas Oil Stadium, Purdue University residence halls and the recently announced Trail Side on Mass Ave.
