What started out as a way for Mays Chemical Co. President and CEO Kristin Mays-Corbitt to earn money during high school evolved into 26 years of continuing a family legacy.
In 1980, William G. “Bill” Mays established Mays Chemical Company in Indianapolis. Corbitt began working with Mays Chem during holiday breaks in high school. During that time she would help file papers, assist customers and “lend a helping hand,” Corbitt told the Recorder.
She said working as an intern gave her exposure to the company and how it operated which sparked an interest in Corbitt to continue.
“While I was working here, I just kept finding things to do and things that fascinated me,” Corbitt said.
The Indianapolis native always knew she wanted her future to be “business related” and decided to study business management at Indiana University where she received her undergraduate degree.
In 1996, Corbitt began working for Mays Chem full-time and held managerial roles in a variety of departments including customer service, sales, traffic and logistics and operations.
Corbitt was named president and CEO in 2012 when company founder Bill Mays retired.
Mays Chem currently has 200 employees and Corbitt makes it her priority to create a work environment that is like a family. One way she does this is by having a company lunch a few times a month.
Corbitt also has an open-door policy with those who work at Mays Chem and said when she is not traveling for business she is in the office and welcomes anyone to come and talk to her at any time.
“I have been very blessed, and so I really want to make sure that I am blessing others,” Corbitt said. “So, we have a tremendous work force here at Mays and we’re more like family.”
The company also provides workshops on topics like finance and relationships for their employees.
“We want people to have a good quality of life inside of the company and outside, “Corbitt said.
