AT&T brings mobile broadband network to Camp Atterbury

As part of its continuing network investment to support growing demand for advanced mobile devices and applications, AT&T announced the activation of a new mobile broadband cell site and the availability of its mobile broadband network at Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center, a training base for the Indiana National Guard located in Nineveh, Ind.

The activation of mobile broadband technology will enhance wireless coverage for military personnel at Camp Atterbury, and for residents and businesses in Bartholomew and Johnson counties. With mobile broadband speeds, AT&T customers can surf the Web, download files faster, and enjoy the very latest interactive mobile applications.

“We can never do enough to thank the brave men and women who serve our country,” said state Sen. Greg Walker. “Providing better access to fast and dependable wireless service for our soldiers so that they can stay connected with friends and family who miss them is one of the best things we can do.”

For more than 85 years, AT&T has been dedicated to supporting active military personnel. Earlier this year, the AT&T Pioneers, an employee volunteer program, obtained 100-minute prepaid calling cards to distribute to active U.S. military service personnel. The Indiana Chapter AT&T Pioneers presented Indiana USO members located at Camp Atterbury with 2,000 of these cards.

“AT&T has had a tremendous impact for military personnel stationed at Camp Atterbury,” said Lt. Col. Eric Gambill, director of Information Management at Camp Atterbury. “The new cell site, improvements to the wireless network and prepaid calling cards, allow us to keep military members and their families connected.”

The new cell site is one part of AT&T’s ongoing efforts to drive investment and innovation to deliver the nation’s best, most advanced mobile broadband experience for customers. With the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network, AT&T provides accelerated mobile data speeds and simultaneous voice and data capabilities.

“Demand for wireless bandwidth is growing rapidly, and we want to meet that demand for our customers,” said Brian Ducharme, vice president and general manager for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets in Indiana. “We’re excited to bring/expand mobile broadband to Camp Atterbury. Our recently announced agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA also represents a major commitment to strengthen and expand our network. In fact, this deal, if approved, means that we’ll be able to expand the next generation of mobile broadband – 4G LTE – from our current plan of 80 percent of the U.S. population to more than 97 percent.”

This network improvement is another example of the investment AT&T has made in Indiana. AT&T invested nearly $925 million in its Indiana wireless and wireline networks from 2008 through 2010.

“AT&T has long supported the men and women who serve every day to keep us safe,” said AT&T Indiana President George S. Fleetwood.Ā “Camp Atterbury is such an important part of our nation’s military efforts, and we hope that providing better access to fast and dependable wireless service will make easier the important work that is being done there.”

AT&T’s mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T has the broadest international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, providing access to voice service in more than 220 countries and data service in more than 200 countries. AT&T also offers voice and data roaming coverage on more than 135 major cruise ships, as well as mobile broadband services in more than 130 countries.

AT&T also operates the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network with more than 24,000 hotspots in the U.S. and provides access to more than 135,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn’t count against customers’ monthly wireless data plans.
