The Office of the Attorney General invites Hoosiers to visit IndianaUnclaimed.gov or text CLAIM to 46220 to see what types of treasures await you!

Indiana unclaimed property has returned over $38,000,000 to Hoosiers in 2024 so far and has plans to return much more by the end of the year.

All states have an unclaimed property department which is typically housed in the Treasurer’s Office, but Indiana is the only state in the nation where the Attorney General oversees unclaimed property.

The Unclaimed Property Division takes every step to ensure they are paying the rightful owner or heir.

So, what is Unclaimed Property anyway? Unclaimed property is any financial asset with no activity by its owner for an extended period of time. The organization holding the potential unclaimed property makes every effort to contact the owner and establish activity through an online login, written correspondence, a withdrawal or deposit, or an update to personal information. If these attempts do not produce activity, the asset is reported to the state of the owner’s last known address. When the companies report the property to the Attorney General’s Unclaimed Property Division, they can get that liability off their books and then the office safeguards those funds while aggressively attempting to locate the owner or heir.

Examples of potential unclaimed property consists of the following:

Ā· Unclaimed wages or commissions

Ā· Insurance proceeds

Ā· Money orders

Ā· Safe deposit box contents

Ā· Savings and checking accounts

Ā· Refunds

Unclaimed property is NOT houses, boats, cars or the contents of storage facilities. It is also NOT a scam and it is FREE to search your name and claim your funds from the office. There are some businesses or individuals called asset locators who will charge you to help claim your property, but you do not have to use them. You can claim your property from the office for free.

You may also claim funds that belong to a deceased relative if you are the entitled heir. Some claims can be paid quickly, and some may require more time and documentation to pay. The Unclaimed Property Division takes every step to ensure they are paying the rightful owner or heir. You may be asked to connect yourself to a previous address. Connecting to a previous address is one way the office has to validate that you are the rightful owner, but sometimes people don’t have that documentation.

If you can’t connect yourself to a previous address, the office can still work with you to get your property returned. Don’t give up if that is the only thing keeping you from submitting a claim. Please contact the office and they will work with you!

Individuals and/or businesses have 25 years to claim money once it is reported to the Unclaimed Property Division.

Money isn’t the only thing potentially waiting for you in the Unclaimed Property Division – some tangible items may also have been received from dormant safe deposit boxes. After three years, the division typically liquidates those items through such means as eBay auctions. You can check out the items for bid on the main page of www.IndianaUnclaimed.gov

Be sure to check IndianaUnclaimed.gov or text CLAIM to 46220 to search your name, family, or business.
