In a heartfelt recognition of resilience, leadership and dedication, Indy Steelers President Tiffany Hamilton is the Indianapolis Colts’ 2024 Changemaker.
The Changemaker Award highlights individuals who inspire change and profoundly impact their communities.
Hamilton was shocked to be this year’s recipient.
“I had no idea,” Hamilton told the Indianapolis Recorder. “It was genuinely a surprise.”
Hamilton’s story is nothing short of extraordinary.
Her late husband, Richard Donnell ‘Coach Nell’ Hamilton, was the former president of the youth football organization since its founding in 2005 in the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood.

Coach Nell died in a road rage incident in January 2023, leaving Hamilton to shoulder the mantle of leadership on and off the field.
“Losing Nell was devastating,” Hamilton told the Indianapolis Recorder.
Hamilton said that the Indy Steelers meant so much to Coach Nell, and continuing the organization is her way of honoring her husband’s legacy.
“I knew the work he started couldn’t end with him,” Hamilton said.
Since Coach Nell’s passing and Hamilton’s stewardship, the Indy Steelers thrived in a time of adversity. She redefined what it means to create a safe, nurturing environment for young athletes, concentrating on mentorship, community building and personal development.
Beyond the gridiron, the Indy Steelers emphasize instilling life lessons like discipline, teamwork and perseverance — values Coach Nell instilled and Hamilton champions.

Hamilton implemented initiatives surrounding academic support, career mentoring, financial literacy and mental health resources for the youth involved in the program.
Additionally, Hamilton fosters partnerships with local organizations like MLK Center, Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, Indy Parks and Recreation, Eli Lilly and many others, ensuring the Steelers’ families have access to necessary resources.
“The goal is to give these kids a space where they can grow not just as athletes, but as a person,” Hamilton said.
Parents praise Hamilton’s commitment, with many young athletes crediting her guidance for helping them navigate both personal and academic challenges.
The Indianapolis Colts’ Changemaker Award not only celebrates Hamilton’s contributions but also amplifies the legacy of the Indy Steelers and the community they serve.
As part of the honor, the Colts will provide additional resources and visibility to help Hamilton continue her mission.
Nevertheless, the recognition is bittersweet.

“This award is not just for me, it is for Coach Nell, for the kids and for every family that believes in what we’re building,” Hamilton said.
The Indianapolis Colts will celebrate Hamilton at an upcoming Colts home game at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis.
“It is proof that even in the face of disaster, we can create something beautiful,” Hamilton said.
